Dr Kevin Kane has researched, consulted and taught in the HACCP field for over 15 years, specializing in the managerial aspects of the discipline as well as in the regulatory impact of food safety regulations on small and micro-sized food businesses. He is still one of the only management and organizational development specialists working in the HACCP field. He is also one of the first academics to view management as the key element in achieving food safety objectives and cost effective, successful HACCP, in regulatory, enforcement and organizational contexts, and his innovative approaches continue to be at the forefront of this discipline.
He was a founder member of the International Centre for HACCP Innovation (ICHI), which led the development of the first post-graduate qualifications in HACCP and which now has an array of short-course, MsC and PhD students. He was seconded to the UK Food Standards Agency to produce the management elements of the innovative Safer Food Better Business (SFBB) model of HACCP for small food businesses which is now in use across England in over 100,000 businesses. He has achieved success in gaining Governmental funding for HACCP research and has partnered recent bids and grants amounting to over £1.5M.
His PhD thesis examined food micro-businesses and their reactions to new legislation in food safety and shows clearly that the perceptions held by regulators and enforcement officers of the capability of small and less developed businesses to undertake HACCP does not generally match the reality. He also has an MSc in Organization Development and a range of qualifications in accounting and project management.
He is at present supervising three PhD students who are researching the problems of enforcing regulated HACCP by Local Authorities; the development of national food safety systems in Sierra Leone; and the impact of HACCP on small manufacturing businesses.
