Prof Linus Opara graduated with degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Nigeria and Massey University in New Zealand, and is a specialist in postharvest handling and quality management of fresh foods. He is a Research Professor and holds the South African Research Chair in Postharvest Technology at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Prof Opara is experienced in conducting research, training and consultancy in postharvest quality management in countries in South Pacific, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He was a member of the Centre for Postharvest & Refrigeration Research and Programme Director for Engineering Technology at the Institute of Technology & Engineering, Massey University, New Zealand.
Prof Opara has spent nearly 8 years as an academic and consultant in the Middle East, including Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. He was also the Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and Assistant Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research.
He has served as a Visiting Expert in Postharvest Technology at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. His recent assignments included membership of the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Panel on Microbiological Safety of Green Leafy Vegetables, and FAO task team which developed a strategic framework for sustainable agriculture development and food security in Timor-Leste
